Blot of the Urine

At the first sign of urine get paper towels and blot the stain to try to remove as much of the urine as possible. Apply some pressure when pressing down the paper towels. When the towel is soaked use a new one. Repeat this until no more urine is coming up. If the urine stain is already dried this step does not have to be done. This should be done if the stain is on a carpet or other soft material such as a cat bed.

Enzyme Cleaner

There are certain cleaners that are specially formulated using biological enzymes. These enzymes can be used to break down the protein that is found in urine. These enzymes can be used to get rid of the smell. It is best to use this cleaner to treat the stain first before using other cleaners as it may reduce the effectiveness of the enzymes. Allow the urine spot to dry completely. It may take several days but this should remove the smell.

Vinegar and Water

While in most cases the enzyme cleaner will be effective there may be a trace of the urine smell left behind. If this is truly a simple solution can be made using vinegar and water to get rid of the urine scent. Equal parts of white vinegar and water should be mixed in a spray bottle. This mixture should then be used to saturate the urine spot. The mixture will need to be scrubbed into the area until it is completely soaked. The vinegar will help neutralize the smell of ammonia that is found in cat urine. Once the area is dried use the paper towels to blot up as much of the remaining vinegar as possible. Allow the area to dry once it has been blotted.

Household Cleaners

If the cat has urinated on a surface that is hardly a household cleaner can be used to remove the urine scent. This can include urine near the cat food bowl and tile or hardwood floors. Make sure the cleaner does not contain ammonia. Ammonia has a scent that is similar to the urine. Wipe the urine up and with water and then apply the spray cleaner. This mixture should then be allowed to dry.

Once the area is dry use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum up the baking soda. There are some cat strain remove vacuum cleaners that are designed to remove pet odors and pet messes. In addition to removing the baking soda it will help remove urine particles that have attached to the baking soda.

Clean More Often

Cats can be picky about where they use the restroom. Cats like to use litter boxes that are clean and free of waste.
